Bombay Berlin Film Productions (BBFP), based in India and Germany, is proudly marking its 15-year milestone in international storytelling. With the recent completion of principal photography for its inaugural Turkish-language feature, “Thursday Night Is Too Dark,” the company is poised for global expansion, as announced at the Cannes Film Market.
About the Film
This film, directed by Onur Sefer in his debut, is co-produced with Istanbul’s Praksis Entertainment and represents BBFP’s fifth fiction feature. Set over a single night in Istanbul, it offers a “haunting, introspective look at the emotional toll of modern masculinity.”
Development Support
“Thursday Night Is Too Dark” received development support from the German-Turkish Co-Production Development Fund, which includes backing from Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, MOIN Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein, and the Istanbul International Film Festival (IIFF) — Meetings on the Bridge (MoB), an initiative supported by the Turkish Ministry of Culture.
Director’s Vision
Director Sefer describes the film as “a deeply personal exploration of male vulnerability in a society that often demands the opposite.” He expressed gratitude to BBFP and Praksis for trusting a first-time director with such profound themes.
BBFP’s Mission
Katharina Suckale, co-founder of BBFP, emphasized, “This project embodies our core values — cross-cultural exchange, bold new voices, and emotional truth. Onur brings a fresh and fearless perspective from the region.”
Reputation and Future Plans
BBFP has established a strong reputation through internationally acclaimed productions like “Loev” (Tallinn Black Nights, SXSW, BFI Flare), “Trijya” (Shanghai, Tallinn), and “The Road to Mandalay” (Venice, TIFF, Tokyo). The company is now gearing up for significant expansion in both scope and reach.
Transformational Growth
“We have never rushed our growth, which is a key reason for our sustainability and success,” stated Arfi Laamba, actor-producer and co-founder of BBFP. “In this next chapter, BBFP is not just scaling — we’re transforming. Our slate now includes commercial and genre cinema, and we are actively seeking partners who share this vision. We are intentionally evolving into a studio rooted in creativity, collaboration, and commercial success.”
Strategic Collaborations
As part of its strategic growth, BBFP is set to begin service production on a German feature film produced by Neopol Film in India. This project will leverage Indian state and central production rebates, benefiting from BBFP’s extensive local production infrastructure.
Looking Ahead
“We’ve found the perfect home for our production in India with Bombay Berlin,” remarked Tonio Kellner, producer at Neopol Film. “Their team is creatively aligned and logistically sharp. We hope this is just the beginning of many fruitful collaborations.”
Current Status
“Thursday Night Is Too Dark” is currently in post-production and is being prepared for an international festival circuit.
